A web site needs a home. Web hosting services offer disk
space and access to tools for managing web sites on their
servers. The features and prices of hosting plans vary.
I don't recommend a plan that costs under $10 per month.

Domain Names
Most likely you will want a web address that includes
your name. This will need to be registered with a 'Registrar'.
Most web hosting services will do this for you, at an
additional cost, when you sign up for one of their plans.
If you prefer, you can register prior to getting a host.
I recommend using an ICANN
Accredited Registrar.

Site Design
Basic suggestions on what to put on your site.
- Spend some time surfing the web. Make a list of things
that you dislike about web sites and a list of things
you do like.
- The first page should describe who you are and what
your mission is. It should have a minimum number of
images and load fast. In general, most visitors go to
web sites for quick information. If they have to wait
for the opening page to load chances are that they will
leave.
- Some contact information. This may simply be an Email
link or address, phone, fax information.
- When planning web pages, try to keep the pages about
the size of a 8 1/2" x 11"letter.
It's better to have a couple of extra pages than one
really long one that scrolls forever.
- If you have a brick and mortar location; a map, directions,
hours of operation and a picture of the exterior of
the establishment can help visitors find you.
- I'm not a big fan of using features just because I
can or because they look cool. An accountant or physician's
web site should not give the same impression as a site
for a rock musician, artist or other entertainer. Consider
how you want visitors to perceive you and what impressions
you want to convey. Keep it to the point and content
rich.
