Basic Items
  • Heavy paper and pencil for message.
  • ‘Call Police’ sign for window.
  • Basic tools: screwdrivers, pliers, an adjustable wrench, a multitool or pocket knife, lug wrench, jack, spare tire.
  • Jumper cables or portable battery booster.
  • Roll of wire or a couple of 2' lengths for tying up broken parts.
  • Duct tape. Good for a variety of fixes.
  • Flashlight and extra batteries.
  • Towels or wipes.
  • First-aid kit.
  • Blanket.
  • Fresh bottled water.
  • Good sized, empty container with lid.
  • Cellular phone.
  • High-visibility cones or safety flares.
  • High-visibility vest or rain poncho.
  • Waterproof matches/butane lighter.
  • Portable air compressor for inflating tires.
  • Nonflammable aerosol tire sealer.
  • Bottled fuel additive (can be used to drive a short distance if you run out of gas).
  • Work gloves, seasonal jacket or raincoat, comfortable walking shoes or boots.
  • Large diameter candle in deep can.
Winter Other Items To Consider

  • Bag of sand or kitty litter for traction.
  • Extra blanket.
  • Small shovel.
  • Boots.
  • Ice scraper.
  • Large diameter candle in deep can. For some warmth.
  • Small fire extinguisher.
  • Wheel chocks.
  • Hose-repair kit.
  • Funnel.
  • Extra fuses.
  • Bunjee cords.
  • Safety glasses.
  • Insect repellent.
  • If you drive in isolated areas, add some dried food and water or packaged juices.
