General Info

The Brook Sloat site is the project of Bernard Payne.
While not entirely free for me it is free to visitors.
I will try to keep the site online as long as I can. No guarantees.
On the site you will find old and new friends, nostalgic links, articles, photos and much more from days gone by.
The site's existence, growth and success is dependent on every ones participation.

Enjoy!

Using The Message Board and Chat

I get the Message Board and Chat from an outside source. It's free and hassle free for me so I use it.
When trying to join the BSP Board or Chat:
  1. Have cookies enabled. WebTV cookies are always enabled.
  2. First time visitors should "Create a new Login" or "Create Account" first.
  3. First time visitors should press "I agree" to the terms of use.
  4. Login and passwords are case sensitive. Don't use spaces. Write them down somewhere. The same ones are used for both Messages and Chat.
  5. Use "Login" boxes after your account is created.
  6. Chat links to the Message board. When people are in the chat room it lets you know by saying "Chat! (2 chatters)" or however many people are there at a time.

Can't Log In?
Lost ID or Password? Try logging in with a different name.
Make sure you aren't typing in all caps or something like that.

Cookies
Your browser must accept 'cookies'.

WebTV cookies are always on so Login should work.
Cookies are an ID#. This allows you to move around the site and remain Logged In for Chat and Board.

If Netscape click in this order:
Edit / Preferences / Advanced /
Find 'Cookies' and pick one of the "Accept" boxes.

If MS Internet Explorer click:
View / Internet Options / Advanced /
Scroll down to COOKIES and pick one of the "accept" buttons.

Posting Messages
The message board is a free service from Network54. I have limited control of the format.

  • Use "Post" to post new message. Use "Respond" to reply to a message.
  • Try to keep the discussion threads linear.
If the original topic changes more than twice it's a good idea to start a new thread.
If you see the messages going too far to the right, start a new thread.
Respond to original posts or secondary responses. Responses to responses to responses creates havoc. You'll see a lot of ones (1 when this happens. Having to scroll sideways is no fun and from what I hear WebTV user can't do so.
  • Leaving the SUBJECT box empty will make it difficult for others to navigate the board.
  • Adding your EMAIL ADDRESS allows others to email you on the spot. Don't make them look through other messages or elsewhere to find your email.
  • It's a good idea to use your full name. Preferably as you were know in the projects. Previous viewers will probably know you but will new ones? Nope.
  • It's NOT a good idea to post information that you don't want strangers to know. Phone number, street address, etc.
  • Problem: When you post you may get a pop up message like "Document Contains No Data". It will seem like your message is not going to be posted. Usually it IS posted. You may then re-post and I then end up with 2 identical posts. One which I have to delete. You can help. To check, you can open a new browser window and check the message board to see if it's there. I'm trying to resolve this problem with Network54.

Finding Messages
You can use your browser to find postings on a message page. "Edit / Find in Page".

  • Find new posts by typing in a date. Ex: "apr 29" will find all posts on that page with that April 29th. Use month abbreviations. Use only the first three letters of the month then space then date.
  • Using the same Find method, you can search for people and keywords.

Pico Search will help find pages with keywords, phrases and dates across the entire site but will not find the exact spot on the page. The Find feature should be used for this.

Using Pico Search

Pico Search allows you to search the site using keywords or phrases. Pico will make a list of all pages where the keywords were found. You will still have to use the 'Find' feature of your browser to find exactly where the keyword is on the page. It is a free and remote service of which I have little control.

Sending Pictures

Image files should be saved in either JPG or GIF format.

Instructions

1) If mailing on a floppy disk you can send the pics in any format. GIF or JPG are preferred. Most film developers will save photos to floppy in JPG format for a small fee. Include return postage or a couple of bucks.

2) If Emailing the attached pictures MUST be either JPG or GIF.
Some Email programs have 2 ways to add an image to an Email.
EMBED or ATTACH. Please use the Attach method.

3) I if you don't have a scanner you can send the pictures (no slides) and I will do the rest. Include return postage or a couple of bucks. I will return them.

BSP Photo Center - You can upload photos here. They will not show until approved by me. Please make sure they are properly formatted (JPG or GIF) and positioned prior to uploading. If you don't I will not make corrections but delete such photos.
